  • Natural Dyes - Pomegranates

Natural fibers dyed with pomegranates harvested in Austin, Texas above: no mordant--pure and earthy  below: alum pre-mordant brightens colors creating yellow tones Steeped in history and romance pomegranates have long been cultivated, they're even biblical. I find myself lucky to be living in a place they grow prolifically, they're packed with usefulness and in my case a botanical dye. Overall the pomegranate is an attractive shrub or small tree and is more or less spiny, and extremely long-lived. • Our Hand Quilting Community

Meet the Folk Fibers hand quilting community! From the left: Monica, Juliet, myself, and Mercedes March of this year I reached a point in my studio work that I needed assistance with the hand quilting process of my quilt making.       The quilts have arrived at the Levi's Malibu Store, and it feels SO good! It's a privilege to partner with Levi's, I have only great things to say about my experience. Weeks before these three quilts were completed I received a message from Nick Osika, who has been the manager of the store since it opened 7 years ago. Nick expressed his excitement for the quilts to arrive and from then on out, he and the others at the Malibu store have been so supportive and helpful. If you...

Made Here is a project created and run by Jay Carroll, a concept designer for Levis. Made Here are special Levis stores that deliver a bespoke interpretation of the Levi’s® brand. A meaningful component of the Made Here store is the initiative to sell beautiful objects...

  • SASHIKO

I feel in love with quilting by virtue of sashiko.   When I hand quilt I always use shashiko thread for durability and function, but most of all because of the beautiful history that defines it. Sashiko is a Japanese hand-stitiching technique, traditionally used by fisherman and farmers to repair holes in fabric. The plain-stitch technique originates from the working class and remote communities.  It evolved from the need to protect, or mend, clothing and fabric. The basic technique is a small running stitch that follows the grain of the fabric, whereby horizontal rows of stitches are considered stronger than vertical rows.  While the geometric...
