• Flying Geese Quilt

  • The design is a traditional quilt design referred to as flying geese, hints the change in direction of the triangles, representing migratory patterns. This quilt is made with natural dyes, hand dyed by me in small batches.

The pale yellows fabrics in this quilt are achieved using the heartwood of the osage orange tree. The small-batch dye method I use creates subtle shifts in tones, that when pieced together as a quilt feels intuitive yet abstract.

The blues in this quilt are created using natural Indigo, a dye different than any other. It does not require a mordant, rather it is dyed through a living fermentation process. Vat indigo is complex and requires proper instruction, experience, commitment, and comprehension of what's going on in the dye vat and maintaing a balanced alkaline solution. To achieve dark blue I immerse the fabric in the dye bath numerous times, allowing the cloth to dry between sessions, layering the color on the cloth creates a darker blue with each dip.

The quilt is machine pieced and hand quilted. The character of a hand-stitch is timeless, and reveals the skilled work that goes into making a quilt. The white hand-stitches stand out against the indigo blue background as an element of function and design. Sashiko white thread against an indigo background is a traditional approach to using this japanese cotton thread. Sashiko quilting uses simple running stitches, larger than traditional quilting stitches.

The edges are finished using a double-binding technique with the same fabric from the patchwork design.

Arrives packed in a handmade, laser-etched cedar box.
