Foundations in Quilt Making — February: Half-Square Triangles

In February, we’ll step into one of the most versatile and well-loved building blocks in quilting: the Half-Square Triangle (HST). This workshop introduces bias edges and trimming—skills that add precision and open up new possibilities—while keeping the process approachable and enjoyable.

Through guided demonstrations and hands-on sewing, you’ll learn how value contrast and pressing direction work together to create crisp, dynamic patchwork.

What we’ll focus on

• Two-at-a-time HST construction

• Trimming units accurately for clean, crisp shapes

• Understanding value contrast

• Pressing for flat, well-behaved seams

What you’ll make

We’ll look at several ways Half-Square Triangles can be arranged—pinwheel, sawtooth, and chevron—but we’ll work step-by-step through making one finished pinwheel block. You’ll leave with a completed block and the confidence to use HSTs in future quilt projects.

Materials & What to Bring

• Fabric: Please bring at least two different colors or prints—a quarter yard (fat quarter) of each works perfectly. Cotton or cotton-blend fabrics are recommended.

• Sewing Machine: Bring your own machine, if possible.

  • A spare machine is available by request—please reach out ahead of time to reserve it.

• Thread & Needles: Please bring thread and the appropriate needles for your sewing machine.

Supplies Provided

Cutting mats, rotary cutters, and rulers are provided; you may bring your own new rotary blade if you prefer.

Beginner-friendly and fully self-contained, this workshop works beautifully as a stand-alone class or as part of the Foundations in Patchwork series. You’ll receive supportive guidance, space to practice, and plenty of time to find your rhythm at the sewing table.

Seats are limited to keep the learning experience personal and hands-on.
