Foundations in Quiltmaking — January: Squares & the Nine-Patch

Step into the rhythm of patchwork with the block that has welcomed generations of quilters: the classic Nine-Patch. This first month is all about building confidence, finding ease at the sewing table, and learning the fundamental skills that make patchwork joyful rather than intimidating.

We’ll work with straight-grain fabric and simple squares, giving you immediate success and a strong foundation for everything that comes next in the series.

What we’ll focus on

• Straight rotary cutting — clean, accurate cuts that set you up for success

• ¼″ seam allowance — the essential quilting measurement

• Chain piecing — sewing efficiently and with beautiful consistency

• Nesting seams — how to match corners with ease

What you'll make

You’ll leave with one finished Nine-Patch block, made start to finish by you, and the confidence to repeat the steps to create a full quilt.
