Foundations in Patchwork — March: Flying Geese

In March, we turn our attention to one of quilting’s most elegant and expressive building blocks: the Flying Geese unit. This workshop introduces a few more pieces and proportions to manage, offering a gentle challenge that teaches precision while still keeping the process approachable and enjoyable.

Using the no-waste, four-at-a-time method, you’ll learn how size ratios, directional design, and thoughtful pressing all contribute to clean, balanced patchwork.

What we’ll focus on

• No-waste Flying Geese construction (four-at-a-time)

• Understanding and working with the 1:2 block ratio

• Exploring directional arrangements and design possibilities

• Pressing techniques to reduce bulk and achieve flat seams

What you’ll make

You’ll complete one block composed of Flying Geese units, sewn step-by-step with guided support. This versatile unit opens the door to countless quilt layouts, and you’ll leave with the confidence to incorporate Flying Geese into future projects.

Beginner-friendly and fully self-contained, this workshop works beautifully as a stand-alone class or as part of the Foundations in Patchwork series. Expect supportive guidance, hands-on learning, and the space to find your rhythm at the sewing table.
