Colorado Quilt
-
Vintage wool, linen, and cotton fabrics arranged in a strip quilt format. Designed with a fun painterly approach, combining subtle peach hues with bright and contrasting reds. Entirely hand quilted with pure cotton Japanese Sashiko thread, natural cotton batting, and framed with hand-stitched double-fold matching binding.
The strips are arranged in an abstract yet balanced grid in various widths and lengths representing the vivid Colorado landscape of mountains, forests, high plains, mesas, canyons, plateaus, rivers, and desert lands. The color red represents the Colorado River, which early Spanish explorers named the Río Colorado for the red colored silt the river carried from the mountains.
This is the sixth quilt in my 50 American States Series. The design and colors are inspired by the early utilitarian American quilts from the early 1900"s.
