Foundations in Quilt Making — May: Log Cabin / Courthouse Steps
In-person workshop with Maura Ambrose — May 16th, 2026, 10:00 AM–1:00 PM
In May, we’ll explore two iconic block structures that sit at the heart of American quiltmaking: the Log Cabin and its close cousin, Courthouse Steps. Beloved for their simplicity, rhythm, and endless design potential, these blocks teach grounded fundamentals—accurate strip piecing, consistent seam allowances, and the steady flow of building outward from a center.
Working with a central square and a series of surrounding “logs,” you’ll learn how color placement, value contrast, and sequence create dramatically different effects: radiating warmth, strong geometry, or subtle balance. These blocks are meditative to sew and incredibly rewarding for beginners and seasoned quilters alike.
What we’ll focus on
-
Constructing Log Cabin and Courthouse Steps blocks with precision
-
Understanding color and value placement to create contrast and flow
-
Strip cutting for consistency and ease
-
Maintaining accurate seam allowances as blocks grow
-
Pressing methods to keep your block flat, balanced, and square
What you’ll make
You’ll complete either one Log Cabin or Courthouse Steps block—or begin both if time allows—built round by round with guided support. These blocks open the door to countless arrangements, from traditional barn-raising layouts to modern, minimalist interpretations. You'll leave with the confidence to continue piecing these timeless structures at home.
