Stardust Quilt
The polka dot stars in this quilt are created with a block-print pattern and hand-dyed with natural indigo. The solid blue background is a patchwork of linen and cotton hand-dyed with indigo. The quilt is then finished by hand-quilting with Japanese sashiko thread.
The technique used in this dotted cloth is a mud-resist known as “Dabu.” A cold-water resist, dabu is particularly effective for blocking out areas during an indigo bath. The character of dabu and the wooden blocks used to apply it, go together to create the distinctive patterns known as “dabu” prints.
An heirloom quality quilt, with 90 hours work hand-dyeing and hand-stitching, to create a one-of-a-kind keepsake.
