Silk quilt, every color hand-dyed with botanical dyes, machine pieced and hand-quilted. Finished with a hand-sewn silk binding, stuffed with a thin pure-cotton batting, and backed with un-dyed summer weight linen.
This quilt was born from an exploration in color and material. Over a few years of hand-dying silk with plants and minerals, I accumulated a rainbow of naturally dyed silk that begged to made into quilts. I began by making a pair of throw size quilts, this one has bigger blocks of color. Working in a playful improvisational way I pieced together blocks of color that felt happy, bringing a sense of order and balance to an unplanned motif.
My work with silk took off when I became a mother. I was drawn to make quilts and blankets using silk for my daughter. I began testing many different types of silk and fell deeply in love with the weight and ultra-smooth texture of silk charmeuse. The heavier quality of charmeuse has a nice drape, lightweight yet substantial, allowing it to work well as a accent quilt that brings warmth to the body, or hung as art.
